Interview

How did your passion for cars get started?

  • We are the owners of an exciting new start-up called Garage 77. We are a shared work and recreational space. Our space is 70's inspired and we have several vintage pinball machines, guitars and a 1950's 22-foot long shuffleboard table. As part of the experience, our members can enjoy our fleet of classic cars whenever they wish. They can take them home for a few days or just use them to run errands or pick their kids up from school. I live in Hermosa Beach, California and although it's a great place to live and raise a family, our living space and parking space is limited. I'm not what you'd consider a car enthusiast, I just enjoy driving cool classic cars around town. The idea for Garage 77 was to build the club I'd like to join. I work from home (now from Garage 77), and I like to have a space to entertain clients and friends. Garage 77 is the perfect place to do that. Also, the ability to enjoy the cars without the hassle or maintenance is a big part of the Garage 77 experience

How long have you been with Vinty? Estimated income from rentals?

  • As a start-up, Vinty has been instrumental in giving us access to additional revenue. We joined about 2 years ago and the experience has been terrific. Having our cars used in films and photoshoots is a great way to add revenue without adding excessive wear and tear to the vehicles. Our business model has changed because of this. We are able to maintain more cars for our members thanks to the added revenue from Vinty!

Since joining Vinty mid-2017, Garage 77 did about 30 rentals with about $30,000 in revenue.

What do you enjoy most about being able to rent your classic cars through Vinty?

  • The added revenue for placing our cars in films and photoshoots while not adding many miles. Also the freedom to charge our own security deposits which other sites like Turo do not permit.

What was your most memorable rental?

What advice would you give to other car collectors?

  • Trust your instincts. Get a security deposit every time. Always ask for a COI from the production company and make sure it protects the vehicle and not just liability.

  • Take photos before and after of course! Always try to upsell some services like delivery and a car handler. Driving the vehicle yourself or by a trusted contractor is much better than having someone new drive. Insist on having the car towed to location if more than 30 miles. There is always a risk of mechanical failure on these old cars no matter how well maintained so it's good to be ready for contingencies. Have a network of inexpensive tow guys and also have access to someone mechanical who can go out and solve issues on the spot is very handy
